The cliffs are interesting from a geological point of view, being composed mainly of marl, limestone with a large proportion of clay, quite layered. During the wettest times of the year, a large layer of clay is formed, which according to local tradition has several medicinal uses. On one of the cliffs on the west side is the Atalaia viewpoint, from where you can see Praia da Luz and the coastline as far as Sagres. On the east side, the cliffs are mainly ochre-toned, with the first rock formations that frame Ponta da Piedade starting to appear, while on the west side, the cliffs are mainly light grey.
